Hormuz witnessed a century of occupation by the Portuguese since 1514 in the course of its vibrant history. Ruins of their military fortresses, rich traditions and natural beauties, and hospitable residents are amongst tourist attractions of the island.
Sprawled about 8km off the Iranian mainland on the Strait of Hormuz, the island is covered by sedimentary rock and layers of volcanic material on its surface.
